7 Questions Every Disciple Should Answer
Spiritual warfare isn’t a niche topic for specialists—it’s the daily reality of anyone who follows Jesus. Here are seven questions to help you assess your readiness for the battle you’re already in.
1) Are you parked in repentance, faith, and following Jesus?
Before we come to Christ, we’re captives—the enemy blinds us to the truth (2 Cor. 4:4). Through the Word and the gospel—“the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16)—the Holy Spirit opens our eyes, grants repentance and faith, and indwells us. That move puts us on the front lines.
This isn’t about something you did once; it’s your present posture. Are you now walking in repentance, trusting Jesus, and following Him? Romans 12 describes the lifestyle: in view of God’s mercy, we present our bodies as living sacrifices. That’s battle-ready.
2) Are you removing the devil’s footholds?
Ephesians warns, “Don’t let the sun go down on your anger… and do not give the devil a foothold” (Eph. 4:26–27). Unresolved sin—anger, bitterness, broken relationships, recurring patterns—creates handholds for the enemy.
Pray Psalm 139:23–24: “Search me… see if there’s any offensive way in me.” Deal with whatever the Lord surfaces, and ask to be filled (or refilled) with the Holy Spirit. James 4:7 gives the cadence: submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee.
3) Do you understand the war is already won?
This isn’t Star Wars—two equal sides vying for balance. Jesus is Lord. He is risen. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess (Phil. 2:10–11). Satan is defeated; his strategy is lies and deception to keep people from the Savior. We fight from victory, not for it.
4) Are you secure in your relationship with Jesus?
Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice… I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:27–30). Ephesians 2 reminds us we’ve been made alive with Christ and seated with Him in the heavenly realms.
Jesus has granted authority to overcome the enemy (Luke 10:19), but our joy is even deeper: our names are written in heaven (Luke 10:20). Security fuels courage.
5) Are you clothed in the armor of God?
Ephesians 6 paints a vivid picture so that “after you have done everything, to stand.” Each piece echoes who Jesus is and what He’s done:
-Helmet of salvation — Jesus is our Savior.
-Breastplate of righteousness — He is our righteousness.
-Shield of faith — Faith in Him, the Lord.
-Sword of the Spirit (Word of God) — His Spirit and His Word.
-Shoes of the gospel of peace — Jesus is our peace.
-Belt of truth — He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Bottom line: the armor is about being in Christ and clothed with Christ.
6) Are you partnered with others for the battle?
Warfare assumes an army. You weren’t designed to fight alone. Who prays with you and for you? Who knows your specific battles? Who serves alongside you on mission in your community?
Identify your fellow soldiers—the ones who love you enough to know when you need a pat on the back or a kick in the pants.
7) Do you grasp the nature and purpose of the war?
There’s a battle because there’s good news the enemy wants silenced and a kingdom he wants to halt. Jesus described His mission (Luke 4:18–19): proclaim good news to the poor, freedom for prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, release for the oppressed.
He passed that mission to us. Evangelism is part of the battle. Disciple making is part of the battle. Living as salt, light, and the fragrance of Christ in our homes, workplaces, schools—that’s the battleground.
While there are times of direct confrontation (deliverance, breaking strongholds), the heart of the daily fight is simple obedience—keeping in step with the Spirit and overcoming the world, the flesh, and the devil.
