In this video, we outline eight core components essential to leading a missional disciple-making small group effectively. While the structure is simple, its impact can be profound when applied consistently.
The first element is hosting—creating a welcoming, comfortable space where group members can gather. This includes considerations like seating, temperature, and accommodating children. Next is welcoming, ensuring each person feels acknowledged and at ease upon arrival, especially newcomers.
The meeting itself begins with a check-in question (like “high, low, and buffalo”) to understand where each person is emotionally and spiritually. This is followed by an opening prayer that invites God's presence and sets the tone for the gathering.
At the heart of the meeting is the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) method. Participants read a Scripture passage and answer a set of simple but transformative questions: What stands out? What does it reveal about God? About people? What challenges or encourages me? And crucially, what will I do as a result? This obedience-based approach helps turn knowledge into action.
The group also includes outreach training, equipping members to share their personal testimony and present the gospel clearly. Intercessory prayer follows, where members pray for each other and those they’re reaching out to, while guarding against turning prayer time into advice-giving.
Finally, the group closes by planning the next meeting and rotating leadership roles so that every member gradually learns to host, pray, and lead studies—ensuring multiplication and spiritual maturity.
