The Gift or Function of Evangelism

The Gift of Evangelism: Why Your Church Needs You to Embrace It

What does it mean to be a gifted evangelist?
And more importantly—could that be you?

This isn’t just a theoretical question. It’s a crucial one for the health and mission of the church today.

Because if there’s one major bottleneck in disciple-making right now, it’s this:
we’re not reaching enough new people.

And one of the key reasons?
Our evangelists are not activated.

The Bigger Framework: Ephesians 4 and Disciple-Making

In Ephesians 4, we’re given a foundational picture of how the church grows and matures:
"Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers to equip His people… so that the body of Christ may be built up."

This passage isn’t about hierarchy.
It’s not about power structures.
It’s about function.

These five roles, often called APEST are best understood as a team. Together, they reflect the full ministry of Jesus and work to build up the body.

Apostle: drives mission forward
Prophet: calls people back to God’s voice
Evangelist: brings people into the kingdom
Shepherd: cares for the people
Teacher: grounds people in truth

When all five are active, the church becomes healthy, unified, and mature.
When they’re not… things break down.

The Problem: Missing Functions in the Church

Many churches today are primarily led by shepherds and teachers.
That’s not wrong—but it’s incomplete.

What often gets sidelined are:
Apostolic drive (mission advancement)
Prophetic clarity (hearing from God)
Evangelistic urgency (reaching the lost)

The result?
Churches become inward-focused
Disciple-making slows down
Few new people come to faith

You can run a church without all five functions.
But you cannot effectively make disciples without them.

So What Does an Evangelist Actually Do?

When people hear “evangelist,” they often think of someone like Billy Graham.
But that’s not the focus here.
We’re talking about functional evangelists in the local church.

If that’s you, here’s what it looks like:

1. You See More People Come to Faith
Everyone is called to share the gospel.
But evangelists see a disproportionate harvest.

2. You Stir Evangelism in Others
You naturally create urgency and passion for reaching people.

3. You Equip Others
You help people actually learn how to share their faith.

4. You Identify Other Evangelists
You spot and activate others with the same gifting.

In short: You are a catalyst for mission.

How Do You Know If You’re an Evangelist?

Each APEST function has a “core question” it asks.

Apostle: Are we moving forward in God’s mission?
Prophet: Are we hearing God clearly?
Evangelist: Are new people coming to faith?
Shepherd: Are people cared for?
Teacher: Are we grounded in truth?

If your natural lens is:
“Are people entering the kingdom?”
…there’s a strong chance you’re functioning as an evangelist.

You Won’t Know Until You Start

Here’s the reality:
You don’t discover the gift of teaching until you teach.
And you don’t discover the gift of evangelism until you share your faith.

At 12Church, we emphasize simple, reproducible practices:
Pray and pay attention
Make a list of people far from God
Pray for them consistently
Watch for opportunities
Step into conversations
Share your story and the gospel

Everyone is called to do this.

But as you step out, something may happen:
Conversations open more easily
People respond quickly
You see repeated fruit

And suddenly you realize:
“This keeps happening…”

That’s often how evangelists are discovered.

The 5–10% That Changes Everything

It’s often suggested that 5–10% of believers are gifted evangelists.
That’s not a small number.
In most churches, that’s dozens of people.

But here’s the issue:
Most of them are sitting on the bench.

Not because they’re unwilling—
but because they’ve never been:
identified
equipped
released

The Disciple-Making Bottleneck

If we’re honest, disciple-making often stalls at the very beginning:
You can’t make disciples if you’re not reaching new people.

And one of the biggest reasons we’re not reaching new people is:
Our evangelists are not activated.

This is the gap.
And closing this gap could change everything.

YOUR Call to Action

Every believer is called to live on mission.

But if you discover that you are an evangelist, then your calling is even more specific:
Embrace it
Develop it
Ask for deeper empowerment from the Spirit
Step out boldly
Multiply your impact through others

Because the reality is this:
The fields are ripe for harvest.

We’re all on the same team.
We’re all working in the same field.

But some of you?
You’re harvesters.

So step into it.
Run with it.
And watch what God does.
